M&S Rolls Out 30-Plus Value Groceries to Challenge Big-Six Supermarkets

The retailer is repositioning as a shopping-list destination by pricing core staples lower without dropping quality.

Overview

  • M&S says more than 30 new low-price items have launched this month, including 500g and 750g 5% fat beef mince and 1kg frozen sweetcorn.
  • M&S reports value-line sales rose 20% in last year’s third quarter and says its Remarksable Value range has doubled in size since 2023.
  • The retailer highlights bestsellers such as loose bananas at 90p per kg, a 1.5kg lasagne at £9 and a dozen free-range eggs at £3.30, with beef mince sales up about 80% after joining the range.
  • M&S cites Worldpanel data to claim it is the fastest-growing grocer among families, while YouGov polling shows a three-point rise in families likely to shop there and a 10-point improvement in value perceptions over two years.
  • The company plans to keep investing in value as it aims to double its food business, with BRC/NIQ reporting food inflation at 3.3% and Worldpanel noting Lidl’s share up 0.5 points to 7.8% as M&S grocery sales rose 7.2% over 12 weeks.
