MRVC Floats Global Tender for 2,856 AC Vande Metro Coaches for Mumbai Suburban Rail

December bid dates signal a phased rollout supported by 35-year upkeep plus two depots.

Overview

  • MRVC issued a procurement-cum-maintenance tender under MUTP III/IIIA for 2,856 fully air-conditioned suburban coaches in 12, 15 and 18-car configurations.
  • Bid submission starts on December 8, 2025 with bids to be opened on December 22, 2025, with eligibility reported as open to global bidders compliant with Make in India norms.
  • The contract includes comprehensive maintenance for 35 years and the creation of two maintenance depots, reported at Bhivpuri (Karjat) and Vangaon (Palghar).
  • Tendered trains are specified with automatic doors, higher-capacity HVAC, cushioned seating, charging points, infotainment, vestibules, faster acceleration and a design speed up to 130 km/h.
  • A prototype is expected roughly 2–2.5 years after contract award before series production, with media reporting the tender value around Rs 21,000 crore and some coverage citing figures up to Rs 30,000 crore.
