MPs Order West Midlands Police Chief Back Over Maccabi Fan Ban Evidence

The committee demanded records from police, the council, the UK Football Policing Unit to test claims used to justify the Villa Park exclusion.

Overview

  • Dame Karen Bradley wrote to Chief Constable Craig Guildford on December 10 requesting his return to give further evidence in the new year and warning that misleading Parliament is a serious matter.
  • The committee sought the Community Impact Assessment, the email summary of the unminuted Dutch policing call, and correspondence with Maccabi Tel Aviv, UEFA, the UK Football Policing Unit and the Home Office, plus details of the Young Boys risk assessment.
  • West Midlands Police previously apologised for falsely saying local Jewish representatives backed the ban and acknowledged a fictitious Maccabi v West Ham match appeared in its intelligence.
  • Guildford has accepted that a claim of 5,000 officers policing a Maccabi v Ajax game in Amsterdam was an assumption disputed by Dutch authorities.
  • The government restated its opposition to the ban, HMICFRS is due to report by year end, politicians pressed for a judge-led inquiry, and the November 6 match went ahead without away fans with protests and 11 arrests.
