MPs Condemn PIP Delays as DWP Moves to Triple In‑Person Assessments and Extend Reviews

The watchdog warns year-long waits are harming claimants, with digital upgrades now expected in 2029.

Overview

  • A Public Accounts Committee report found only about 51% of PIP claims met the 75‑working‑day target in 2024–25, with some people waiting more than a year.
  • From April 2026, face-to-face assessments will rise to 30% for PIP and for Work Capability Assessments, up from 6% and 13% respectively in 2024.
  • PIP award reviews for most claimants aged 25 and over will be spaced to a minimum of three years for new claims, increasing to five years at the next review if eligibility continues.
  • The government forecasts around £1.9bn in savings by 2030/31 and cites redeploying roughly 1,000 work coaches alongside a £647m systems modernisation programme.
  • Charities warn more in-person checks risk unfairness for people with fluctuating or invisible conditions, as the DWP’s online application pilot continues with a 20% digital-processing goal pushed to 2029.
