MPS Closes Indoor Summer Programs for Two Days Over Heat Forecast

Citing public-health guidance, the district says the pause is a short-term safety measure and will reassess operations for July 16.

Overview

  • The district announced that Summer Academy, Extended Learning Opportunity and all indoor Milwaukee Recreation school sites will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 14 and 15.
  • Officials made the decision in consultation with Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Totoraitis and described it as a precaution against forecasted excessive heat.
  • Outdoor Milwaukee Recreation playgrounds with splash pads and wading pools will remain open to offer cooling, and staff urged that children be supervised by an adult at those sites.
  • Summer meals will still be served at 13 designated Milwaukee Recreation sites around the city and recipients must eat the meals on site.
  • The closures are explicitly temporary, the district expects to resume normal operations on July 16 pending updated weather conditions and further public-health guidance.
