MP Police Orders Bhagavad Gita Readings for Recruits During Margashirsha

Congress alleges saffronisation after ADG Raja Babu Singh links nightly scripture to discipline.

Overview

  • The training wing directed all eight police training schools to have roughly 4,000 constable recruits read one chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita each night during Margashirsha, preferably before meditation.
  • ADG (Training) Raja Babu Singh says regular reading will guide trainees toward a righteous, disciplined life and help balance intelligence and emotional quotients.
  • The move follows his July push for Ramcharitmanas recitals in training and an earlier effort in Gwalior to distribute Bhagavad Gita copies and encourage similar readings.
  • The state Congress condemned the directive as an attempt to radicalise and saffronise the force, while the BJP defended the Gita as philosophical rather than communal.
  • The training wing also announced Heartfulness meditation sessions for December 19–21 at heritage sites across the state, open to citizens and led by 76 instructors in 55 districts at no cost to the department.
