Overview

  • City records show 12.454 million tons of daily solid waste but Servicios Urbanos crews cover only about 14,078 kilometers each day with 706 teams and 7,955 carts.
  • Vendors at La Merced, San Andrés Tetepilco and Prohogar report that two trucks fill daily while excess trash remains, and Tepito streets receive pickups just two to three times per week.
  • Field surveys in Tepito documented piles up to 14 tons at the corner of Santa Lucía and Peñón, blocking sidewalks and accelerating urban decay.
  • The 2023 solid waste inventory confirms 889 clandestine dumps across the capital, including 13 barrancas in Álvaro Obregón where mattresses, furniture and animal carcasses are routinely discarded.
  • Recent heavy rains and accumulated debris have clogged drainage networks citywide, with Cuauhtémoc logging 534 blockages in 2024 and Iztapalapa and Benito Juárez reporting more than 250 combined in early 2025.
