Mountain West Nears Addition of UTEP Amid Conference Realignment

The Mountain West Conference is finalizing a deal to make UTEP its seventh full-time member, with an official announcement expected soon.

The Mountain West Conference is in the final stages of adding UTEP, with both sides expressing mutual interest.
The conference is rebuilding after losing five schools to the Pac-12, leaving it with six full-time members and Hawaii as a football-only member.
UTEP, currently in Conference USA, would bring the Mountain West its first presence in Texas and help the league move closer to the NCAA-required eight full-time members.
Texas State has also been offered membership by the Mountain West but is considering an offer from the Pac-12 as well.
UTEP has a rich history in athletics, including 15 bowl games in football and a national championship in men's basketball in 1966.
