Mountain Bikers Find Missing Idaho Hiker 17 Miles From Car, Help Coordinate Airlift

Officials credit the riders' GPS coordinates with satellite texts for guiding a helicopter to the remote site.

Overview

  • Heather Wayment was reported missing on Sept. 17 after her vehicle was found at the Prairie Creek trailhead in Blaine County.
  • The next day, three Pocatello mountain bikers discovered her in Camas County about 17 miles away, dehydrated, disoriented and barefoot with bleeding feet.
  • Three dirt bikers who arrived later recognized her as the missing hiker, shared food and helped move her to a meadow suitable for a helicopter landing.
  • Using GPS, the onX mapping app and satellite texts relayed through a family contact, the group provided coordinates that brought a Life Flight helicopter to the area.
  • She was flown to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise as authorities praised the bikers and search teams, with her condition and the circumstances of her route still unconfirmed.
