Mount Underwood Wildfire Near Port Alberni Downgraded to No Longer a Fire of Note

A week of rain cooled the blaze enough for officials to drop its special‑risk designation.

Overview

  • BC Wildfire Service says the fire has been classified as being held since the evening of Aug. 20 and is projected to stay within its roughly 35‑square‑kilometre perimeter.
  • About 40 millimetres of rain over four to five days reduced active fire behaviour, as roughly 170 personnel with seven helicopters and 14 heavy machines continue strengthening containment.
  • Bamfield and nearby First Nations remain without grid power and face a closed main access road after roughly six kilometres of BC Hydro lines were destroyed.
  • BC Hydro targets restoration by around Aug. 30 and now expects to finish a few days earlier despite rebuilding across steep cliffs and unstable rock affecting more than 500 customers.
  • Evacuation orders and alerts have been downgraded in the Port Alberni area, and B.C. reports about 60 active wildfires with two out of control in remote northeastern regions.
