Mount Tamalpais Hiker Lost on Halloween Found Safe After Overnight Search

A multi-agency night operation used e-bikes, a drone, a UTV plus CHP thermal imaging to locate him.

Overview

  • The man texted his wife around 2:30 p.m. that he had taken a wrong turn and that his phone battery was very low.
  • His wife provided a Find My location near Bon Tempe Dam about 5:30 p.m., then reported him overdue when he did not return.
  • Deputies and park rangers conducted a hasty sweep of fire roads before calling in Marin County Search and Rescue at 11:20 p.m.
  • About 35 responders searched from Rock Springs and Sky Oaks using e-bikes, a UTV and a drone, with CHP air support, and found him shortly after 2 a.m. near the Kent Trail above Van Wick Creek.
  • Rescuers gave him water, assessed him as dehydrated but in good condition, learned his phone died before dark and that he stayed put after a few non-injury falls, then escorted him to the trailhead and a deputy drove him to his car.
