Overview

  • On June 17 at 5:35 pm local time, the volcano hurled a mushroom-shaped ash column up to 10,000 meters high and registered 50 tremors in two hours, far above its normal activity level.
  • Indonesia’s Geology Agency raised the alert to level 4 and expanded the exclusion zone to 8 km, prompting the evacuation of at least two villages and advisories for residents to wear protective masks.
  • At least 32 flights to and from Bali have been grounded or turned back, with carriers including Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Air India, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand adjusting schedules or cancelling services.
  • Flores Island’s Fransiskus Xaverius Seda airport will remain closed until Thursday under an AirNav order, while Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai Airport operates on revised timetables with ongoing ash monitoring.
  • Authorities warn that heavy rainfall could trigger dangerous lahar floods in rivers draining the volcano and say 24-hour surveillance of seismic and volcanic activity will continue.
