Mount Everest Implements Poo Bag Rule for Climbers

In response to environmental concerns, climbers must now carry their waste back in special bags to base camp for disposal.

  • Mount Everest climbers are now required to carry their waste back in special bags to base camp for disposal, addressing the issue of human excrement not fully degrading due to extreme temperatures.
  • Authorities have introduced the rule in response to complaints about visible human stools on rocks and the unpleasant smell, which is affecting the image of the mountains.
  • Around three tons of human waste are estimated to be between Camp One and Camp Four on Everest, with significant amounts at South Col, known as Camp Four.
  • The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee is procuring about 8,000 poo bags for climbers and support staff, containing chemicals to solidify waste and minimize odor.
  • If successful, the initiative could be extended to other mountains in the Himalayas, as climbers in other parts of the world already use similar waste management practices.
