MoU With Nepal Consulate Clears Ramp Site for Kolkata Metro Purple Line Tunnelling

The agreement ends a three-year diplomatic and legal impasse, allowing RVNL to start the Mominpur–Khidderpore ramp needed to drive tunnels toward Esplanade.

Overview

  • The signed land-swap exchanges 409.53 sq. m. from the Nepal Consulate for 526.34 sq. m. of adjoining Metro Railway land, removing a critical bottleneck.
  • Officials said the parcel is required to build the ramp that will enable tunnelling on the Mominpur–Esplanade underground section of the Purple Line.
  • The MoU was signed at RVNL’s Model Room at the Victoria station site by Consul General Jhakka Prasad Acharya and senior Metro, RVNL and MEA officials.
  • The deal follows multiple rounds of talks from 2022 to 2025 involving Nepal’s foreign ministry, India’s MEA, Metro Railway and RVNL in Kathmandu, New Delhi and Kolkata.
  • Courts have disposed of tenant and shop-owner challenges to land acquisition, enabling possession and paving the way for construction as the corridor targets full opening in late 2028–2029.
