Motorway Closures in North West Leave Rush‑Hour Tailbacks

Emergency teams secured a woman on the M60 while lane reopenings on the M6 have not cleared heavy congestion across the local motorway network.

Overview

  • Police closed the M60 between junctions 17 (Whitefield/Prestwich) and 18 (Simister) for a concern-for-welfare incident and officers secured the woman at the scene.
  • Greater Manchester Police, North West Ambulance Service, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue and National Highways coordinated the response and set signed diversions using local routes such as the A56 and A576.
  • A separate early-morning collision between a van and an HGV closed the M6 northbound between junctions 32 and 33 in Lancashire; Lancashire Police said there were no injuries and lanes have been gradually restored after recovery work.
  • Traffic on the M1 had earlier been held between junctions 20 and 21 with National Highways reporting roughly 30 minutes' delays, and the combined incidents caused queues that spread onto the M61, M62 and nearby local roads.
  • Drivers are being asked to follow diversion signs, allow extra journey time and check live updates from National Highways because residual delays and local road congestion remain while barrier checks and recovery continue.
