Motorcyclist Killed in Stonington Crash Identified as Bank Robbery Suspect
The FBI is assisting Connecticut State Police in investigating whether Twomey’s alleged midday bank heist precipitated his crash with a tractor-trailer on I-95.
Overview
- Shawn Twomey, 52, is accused of holding up the Chelsea Groton Saving Bank in Stonington around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday.
- Approximately 13 minutes later his 2005 Suzuki GSX-R1000 rear-ended a tractor-trailer on I-95 South near Exit 91, throwing him onto the roadway.
- The collision killed Twomey at the scene and shut I-95 between exits 91 and 90 for several hours with motorists diverted at exit 91.
- The tractor-trailer driver, a 41-year-old New Britain man, was uninjured and the state police Collision, Analysis and Reconstruction Squad has taken over the crash inquiry while the FBI probes the robbery.
