Motorcyclist Dies After Hitting Disabled Car on Highway 17 as CHP Seeks Fleeing Driver

Authorities say the Nissan left the roadway for reasons still under investigation.

  • CHP reports a gray 2012 Nissan 370Z left the roadway, struck a sign and a call box, and came to rest in the left lane.
  • A 37-year-old San Jose man on a black 2025 Yamaha motorcycle then hit the rear of the Nissan, was ejected, and died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts; he was wearing a helmet.
  • The Nissan’s driver fled and has not been identified, and investigators are asking anyone with information to call CHP Santa Cruz at 831-219-0200 or the CHP Monterey Communications Center at 831-796-2160.
  • Northbound lanes were closed for several hours during the investigation, and whether impairment played a role has not been determined.
