Motorcycle Lab Tests Put Philips and Osram Legal LED Retrofits on Top

Approval applies only to vehicles on manufacturer lists, requiring buyers to verify fit and carry documentation.

Overview

  • MOTORRAD’s 2025 lab tests with Marelli ranked Philips Ultinon Pro 6000 LED gen2 and Osram Night Braker LED Smart among the best H4 retrofits, and named Osram Night Braker LED Speed and Philips Ultinon Pro 6000 Boost LED joint winners for H7, with lifetimes reported up to about 3,000 hours.
  • Test results show very bright, white illumination with clear cut-off and wide, long-range coverage from top LED retrofits, outclassing standard halogen performance that typically delivers shorter range and roughly 500–550 hours of life.
  • High-performance halogen options such as Philips Racing Vision GT 200, Osram Night Breaker 220/200, and Bosch Gigalight +200 also scored very well, though they generally trade brightness for shorter service life compared with LEDs.
  • Low-cost LED kits sold online without German type approval (ABG) performed poorly in beam quality and are not legal, risking TÜV inspection failures and possible insurance refusal or regress after accidents.
  • Osram and Philips offer approved retrofit routes that are valid only for vehicles on their compatibility lists and require correct installation, with ADAC advising riders to retrieve and carry the ABG via the packaging QR code and to have headlight aim professionally checked; approved sets typically cost around €85 for H7 and up to €120 for H4, versus sub-€20 illegal alternatives.
