MotoGP to Run Separate Sprint Qualifying and Two Grids From 2027

Dorna and Liberty Media say the change aims to create two weekend showpieces and boost on-track action while technical rules are finalised for next year.

Overview

  • The organisers announced on October 7 that from 2027 each round will have a dedicated 15-minute Sprint qualifying on Friday to set a Saturday Sprint grid and a separate Q1/Q2 qualifying on Saturday to set the Grand Prix grid.
  • Friday will feature FP1 (45 minutes) and a shorter FP2 (30 minutes) that will not count toward session access, while Saturday starts with FP3 (20 minutes) followed by a 15-minute Q1 for all riders and a 15-minute Q2 for the top 12.
  • The long-standing pre-qualify route to Q2 will be removed and the Sunday warm-up will be replaced by a 10-minute pit‑lane reconnaissance immediately before the Grand Prix.
  • The format package is paired with a broad technical reset that organisers say will include a planned drop from 1000cc to 850cc engines plus changes to aerodynamics, weight and lowering devices, although full technical rules remain under development.
  • Organisers say the changes were approved during discussions at the Austrian Grand Prix and mirror elements used in Formula 1; teams and engineers will need to revise setup, strategy and logistics to cope with tighter practice time and more frequent qualifying runs.
