Mother Sues Roblox and Discord Over Teen’s Suicide, Alleging Platform-Enabled Grooming

The San Francisco complaint cites lax age checks that it says let an adult groom a child across both apps.

Overview

  • Rebecca Dallas filed the wrongful-death lawsuit Friday in San Francisco County Superior Court against Roblox and Discord over the death of her 15-year-old son, Ethan.
  • The filing alleges an adult posing as a child befriended Ethan on Roblox, urged him to disable parental controls, then moved conversations to Discord and coerced explicit images through threats.
  • Ethan disclosed the online interactions to his mother in December 2023 and died by suicide in April 2024, according to the complaint.
  • Authorities later told the family the person known as “Nate” was likely 37-year-old Timothy O’Connor, who had been arrested on separate charges involving child sexual exploitation.
  • Roblox and Discord said they are committed to safety and highlighted existing safeguards, while the law firm behind the case said it is the ninth suit it has filed on similar allegations as states pursue related actions.
