Mother, Boyfriend and Aunt Charged in Connecticut Girl’s Death as Arraignments Begin

Child welfare officials launched a review of prior involvement following the girl's death.

Overview

  • Authorities publicly identified the remains found in a storage bin behind an abandoned New Britain property as 12-year-old Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-Garcia.
  • Karla Garcia and her sister, Jackelyn Garcia, were arrested Sunday, and Garcia’s boyfriend, Jonatan Nanita, was apprehended Monday night in Waterbury with bonds set at $5 million for Garcia and Nanita and $1 million for Jackelyn.
  • Karla and Jackelyn were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday as the case proceeds under sealed warrants.
  • Investigators say evidence indicates Jacqueline died in fall 2024 while the family lived in Farmington after prolonged abuse and malnourishment, and that her body was kept in the basement and later moved when the family relocated in March 2025.
  • A witness report led police to the bin at a long-vacant New Britain building with no known tie to the suspects, DCF opened a review and placed the girl’s siblings in state custody, and the medical examiner is still determining the cause of death.
