Mother and Son Survive Jeep’s 15–20 Meter Fall on Concón Coastal Road

Police are investigating whether fog-slick pavement, speed or a mechanical issue caused the crash.

Overview

  • The crash occurred around 08:50–09:00 on Thursday on Avenida Borgoño near Roca Oceánica in the Valparaíso Region.
  • Witness video showed the Jeep leaving the roadway and plunging onto coastal rocks roughly 15–20 meters below.
  • Firefighters from Viña del Mar and Concón, SAMU, the Policía Marítima, Carabineros, the Armada and municipal teams carried out the rescue and secured the scene.
  • The 57-year-old driver was immobilized and airlifted to Hospital Gustavo Fricke, while her 24-year-old son was evaluated at the SAR de Concón; both were reported conscious with injuries.
  • Traffic on the coastal route was halted for more than an hour during rescue and vehicle recovery, and officials highlighted the road’s reduced grip in coastal fog as Carabineros continues its inquiry into speed and possible mechanical failure.
