Mother and daughter charged after 3-month-old dies at unlicensed California daycare

They face involuntary manslaughter, felony child endangerment, unlicensed operation charges; the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.

Overview

  • On Saturday morning, deputies and emergency crews responded to a 911 call at a home daycare on Hillcrest Road in Royal Oaks and transported the unresponsive three-month-old to a hospital where the infant was pronounced dead.
  • Investigators determined the residence was operating as an unlicensed daycare that had cared for as many as 30 children of various ages.
  • Maria Marquez, 62, and her daughter Johanna Marquez, 35, were arrested and booked on charges of involuntary manslaughter, felony child endangerment and unlicensed operation of a childcare facility.
  • Each defendant’s bail was set at $50,000; Maria Marquez posted bond Monday while Johanna Marquez remained in the Monterey County Jail.
  • The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has not released a cause of death and said its investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
