Mother and 8-Year-Old Son Killed by BEST Wet-Lease Bus in Mumbai's Wadala

Police have detained the driver pending an inquiry.

Overview

  • The collision occurred near the Wadala Church bus stop around 3:10 pm as the A-174 service was heading toward Bharani Naka.
  • Leoba Selvaraj, 38, and her son Anthony, 8, were taken to KEM and Sion hospitals, where doctors declared them dead.
  • The bus was operated on a wet lease by SMTATPL (Daga Group) from Anik Depot, with driver Bapurao Shivaji Nagbone and conductor Anil Maruti Sakhare identified.
  • Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act and said the RTO will inspect the bus after the driver alleged brake failure.
  • The deaths have intensified scrutiny of outsourced bus operations following a similar fatality involving a wet-lease vehicle on August 12 in Malabar Hill.
