Motability Pauses Drive Smart and Will Remove Users from System from Friday

The scheme says it is halting the telematics app to fix usability, fairness and data concerns and will only relaunch it after redesigning the service with customers.

Overview

  • Motability paused the Drive Smart telematics service and will begin removing customers and deactivating fitted devices from Friday, May 22 unless users told the charity they wanted to stay enrolled.
  • Customers had to notify Motability by May 21 via an emailed form to remain on Drive Smart and anyone who does not act will be taken out of the system automatically.
  • People who earned rewards through Drive Smart have been told to redeem them before May 22; Motability said green-rated drivers could earn up to about £160 a year in vouchers.
  • Motability will deactivate fitted wedge boxes for users who do nothing, keep any journey data under its privacy policy, invite past users to a Headlight Community research group, and will not include Drive Smart in new leases or roll it out to under-30s while paused.
  • Drive Smart was introduced to cut accidents and curb rising insurance costs that affect Motability leases, and the pause comes as the charity faces financial pressure from tax changes taking effect on July 1 and growing public opposition.
