Most Yuma County Fires Contained With One Still Burning at 12,000 Acres

Investigators point to downed power lines as the likely ignition source during an extreme wind event.

Overview

  • Daylight assessment found three total fires overnight, with the 2,000-acre County Road L Fire and 50-acre County Road 44 Fire contained.
  • The remaining active blaze, the County Road 33 Fire south of Eckley near the Heartstrong area, was revised from an early 40,000-acre estimate to about 12,000 acres.
  • Emergency officials reported wind gusts up to 70–80 mph under a red flag warning, with crews constructing firebreaks and trucking water in the rural area.
  • Power outages persist across much of Yuma County and into eastern Washington County as Y-W Electric operates in Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings and works on repairs through the evening.
  • Evacuation shelters opened overnight and then closed early Thursday, residents were told to evacuate if flames approached, and a short-term air quality advisory covered parts of eastern Yuma and Kit Carson counties.
