Overview
- The crash happened around 2 a.m. off the 4400 block of North Susquehanna Trail in Shamokin Dam, where a pickup and double-decker trailer went down a 20-foot embankment and overturned in a creek.
- Crews from multiple departments crossed the creek, cleared brush, and passed calves up ladders one by one over roughly an hour and a half.
- About three-fourths of the 106 newborn calves were rescued, while others died in the wreck and some were euthanized by a veterinarian on scene.
- Responders first ruled out lifting the trailer to avoid further harm, then later raised it onto the road to reach remaining animals, according to the fire chief.
- The driver sustained minor injuries, and the fire chief said the driver reported falling asleep, though state police have not released a cause.
