The mixed producer response from recalls to silence underscores the need for binding EU limits on mineral oil residues in food.

Overview

  • Öko-Test’s analysis of 50 nut and kernel oils found 31 products contaminated with potentially carcinogenic mineral oil components, with only 10 oils completely free of residues.
  • Pumpkin seed oils, particularly six Austrian varieties, scored best with minimal contamination compared to other tested oil types.
  • Peanut oils registered the highest levels of aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH), and some brands exceeded industry self-imposed guidance values.
  • Rewe withdrew a contaminated oil batch from sale, but other producers have ignored the findings or failed to respond to contamination concerns.
  • Öko-Test nutrition scientist Cerline Wolf-Gorny warned that without legal thresholds consumers remain unprotected and urged the EU to establish binding limits for mineral oil in food products.
