Most NCAP Cities Cut PM10 Levels but 25 Report Pollution Rises in 2024-25

Metro hubs lead improvements as rising particulate levels in some smaller cities expose uneven implementation and funding challenges

Overview

  • Government data show 103 of 130 cities under the National Clean Air Programme reduced PM10 concentrations in 2024-25 compared with the 2017-18 baseline.
  • Mumbai led metro performance with a 44% decline in PM10, followed by Kolkata at 37%, while Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru achieved reductions between 12% and 26%.
  • Twenty-five cities recorded PM10 increases, with Aurangabad up 33.3%, Vishakhapatnam and Jalgaon each up 32.9%, and Nalgonda up 32.2%.
  • Twenty-two cities now meet the National Ambient Air Quality Standard by maintaining annual PM10 levels below 60 µg/m³.
  • Of the ₹13,036.52 crore released under NCAP and 15th Finance Commission grants, ₹9,202.21 crore has been utilised to date.
