Most German Cities Still Lack Dedicated Bus Lanes Despite New Rules

A Deutsche Umwelthilfe report highlights delays in bus services linked to the lack of dedicated lanes.

Overview

  • DUH’s survey of 40 major cities finds only five have bus lanes covering more than 1% of their road network.
  • Berlin leads with 121 km of dedicated lanes, representing 2.3% of its streets.
  • Halle (Saale), Krefeld, Magdeburg and Oberhausen have no dedicated bus-only lanes.
  • New amendments to the Straßenverkehrsordnung simplified the process for creating bus lanes, but municipalities have been slow to act.
  • The DUH urges immediate deployment of low-cost pop-up bus lanes to ease congestion and cut CO₂ emissions.
