Overview

  • CHOICE tested 20 popular SPF50 and SPF50+ sunscreens and found 16 fell short of their advertised protection levels
  • Ultra Violette’s Lean Screen SPF50+ Mattifying Zinc Skinscreen returned the lowest result with an SPF of 4 in Australia and 5 in a German lab retest
  • The Therapeutic Goods Administration said it is investigating the findings and will take regulatory action if products are found non-compliant
  • Several manufacturers have disputed CHOICE’s results and some have commissioned independent laboratories to re-evaluate their SPF claims
  • Health experts emphasize that even sunscreens with lower SPF ratings still provide significant UV protection and urge Australians to keep wearing sunscreen
