Moscow Snow Depth Reaches 49 cm as New Cyclone Extends Weeklong Storm

Snow is forecast through Friday with crews maintaining round-the-clock clearing.

  • Fresh snowfall overnight prompted a yellow weather alert from 23:00 to 09:00, with the heaviest period expected between 03:00 and 06:00 before easing later in the morning.
  • Snow cover reached up to 49 cm at some Moscow stations on Monday, including 49 cm at MSU and 43–45 cm at VDNKh and Balchug, well above January norms.
  • About 20% of the monthly precipitation fell in the past 24 hours in the region, with 5–7 mm recorded in the city and up to 8 mm in southern and eastern suburbs.
  • Roughly 145,000 workers and more than 15,000 machines are deployed; about 0.75 million cubic meters of snow have been removed, with authorities urging use of public transport as traffic held at 5/10 in morning peak.
  • The Jan. 9 storm ranked among Moscow’s five strongest in 146 years and set a Jan. 9 daily precipitation record of 21.4 mm, and forecasters project a further 12–16 cm of snow possible by midweek with temperatures trending below normal.
