Moscow Court Sentences Five Pussy Riot Members in Absentia to 8–13 Years

The case uses Russia’s “war fakes” law to punish anti-war art, with terms active only if the exiled performers are detained or extradited.

Overview

  • Maria Alyokhina received 13 years and Taso Pletner 11 years, while Olga Borisova, Diana Burkot and Alina Petrova were each given eight-year terms, according to the Basmanny District Court.
  • Prosecutors cited a December 2022 music video, “Mama, Don’t Watch TV,” as spreading knowingly false information about the Russian Armed Forces.
  • Charges also referenced an April 2024 performance in Munich during which a member urinated on a portrait of Vladimir Putin.
  • All five were tried and sentenced in absentia and have been placed on international wanted lists, Russian authorities said.
  • The defendants, through their lawyers, reject the verdicts as politically motivated and remain outside Russia.
