Moscow Court Orders In-Absentia Pretrial Detention of Historian Tamara Eidelman on Speech Charges

Prosecutors attribute the case to 2024 online posts following a Moscow prosecutor’s review.

Overview

  • Eidelman has been charged under Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code for rehabilitation of Nazism and under paragraph "d" of part 2 of Article 207.3 for publicly disseminating knowingly false information about the use of the Armed Forces.
  • Prosecutors said the court acted in line with the Dorogomilovskaya interdistrict prosecutor’s position and that the criminal case was opened on materials from a Moscow prosecutor’s check.
  • Investigators allege a May 5, 2024 video on a public channel contained negative statements about the USSR’s World War II actions, days of military glory, memorial dates, and veterans.
  • They also allege that on July 8, 2024 Eidelman posted, as if reliable, knowingly false information about the Russian army on social media.
  • Authorities note that Eidelman lives abroad and is designated a foreign agent in Russia, with TASS reporting earlier fines related to that status and alleged army “discreditation.”
