Moscow Braces for New Southern Cyclone After Record Snow With Yellow Alert for Monday Morning

Snowpack remains above seasonal norms across the capital as crews continue round-the-clock clearing.

Overview

  • Russia’s Hydrometcenter set a yellow danger level from 23:00 to 09:00 local time on January 12 due to expected snowfall and ice, with the heaviest bands likely in the southeast of the Moscow region.
  • Forecasts indicate varying outcomes: Hydrometcenter projects up to 8 cm of new snow overnight and up to 10 cm by Monday evening, while the Phobos center expects 3–8 mm of precipitation that may add only 2–4 cm because of settling.
  • Current measurements show 37 cm of snow at VDNH against a 25 cm norm, up to 39 cm in Tushino, 44 cm in New Moscow, and as much as 50–51 cm at Cherusti in the region.
  • The January 9 snowfall ranked among the five strongest in 146 years of observations, delivering 21.4 mm in a day and setting a new daily record for that date, equal to 40% of the monthly norm.
  • Separately, authorities in Russia’s Krasnodar region warned of heavy mixed precipitation, icy conditions, and gusts up to 35 m/s on January 11–12, with potential rises in small river levels.
