Overview
- India reported 4,80,583 crashes in 2023 that caused 1,72,890 deaths and 4,62,825 injuries, up 4.2% in accidents and 2.6% in fatalities from 2022.
- Over-speeding accounted for about 68% of accidents and deaths, while non-use of helmets killed 54,568 two-wheeler riders and lack of seatbelts led to 16,025 fatalities.
- Working-age people bore the brunt, with 66.4% of victims aged 18–45 and 83.4% aged 18–60, and two-wheelers and pedestrians making up roughly 45% and 20% of deaths, respectively.
- Though just about 2% of road length, National Highways saw 31.2% of crashes and 36.5% of deaths; Tamil Nadu logged the most accidents, Uttar Pradesh the most fatalities, and rural areas accounted for 68.5% of deaths.
- Big cities contributed 16.9% of accidents and 10% of deaths, with Delhi recording 1,457 fatalities and Bengaluru 915 (up 19.5%), while tailgating, hit-and-run and head-on collisions were the leading deadly crash types.
