Overview
- The band and Partisan announced Cocoon on Sept. 24, 2026, and the title track is streaming now ahead of the album’s Dec. 4 release.
- The recordings come from sessions in late 1998 and 1999 at Mark Sandman’s Cambridge home studio produced by Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade.
- Sandman’s partner Sabine Hrechdakian and Kolderie digitized the long-shelved tapes in 2023, Kolderie mixed the record, and saxophonist Dana Colley added new parts to three songs in early 2026.
- Cocoon is an eight-song collection that reworks material that partly circulated on bootlegs and the 2004 Sandbox compilation and features wider instrumentation such as piano, acoustic guitar, and extra drums alongside Morphine’s bass and sax.
- The release includes unreleased photographs and liner notes by Hanif Abdurraqib and aims to present these late-period recordings as a unified statement on Sandman’s evolving musical direction.
