Morgan Stanley Opens Digital Asset Lab to Test Stablecoins and DeFi

The segregated lab aims to prototype tokenized deposits, central bank digital currency concepts, tokenized money-market funds, automated DeFi vaults before experiments touch client services.

Overview

  • Morgan Stanley disclosed Tuesday that it has launched a Digital Asset Lab within its existing innovation-lab network to research stablecoins, tokenization and decentralized finance rather than roll out customer products immediately.
  • The bank says the lab is a secure, compliant and segregated environment where teams can prototype tokenized deposits, CBDC ideas, tokenized money-market funds and DeFi vault mechanics before linking experiments to core systems.
  • The lab complements Morgan Stanley’s live digital-asset offerings, which include E*TRADE crypto trading and listed Bitcoin, Ether and Solana trusts, while separate plans pursue custody and staking through a proposed national trust charter.
  • Morgan Stanley already created a Stablecoin Reserves Portfolio for stablecoin issuers and has partnered with Zerohash for E*TRADE trading infrastructure, but the lab’s work is research-focused and does not give clients immediate access to tokenized deposits or DeFi services.
  • The move puts Morgan Stanley alongside peers exploring onchain plumbing to cut settlement friction and automate cash management, and it signals the bank will advance cautiously while regulators and trust-bank approvals remain pending.
