Morena Party Names Candidates for Mexico's 2024 Elections Amid Unity Concerns

Clara Brugada Nominated for Mexico City Mayor Despite Omar Garcia Harfuch Winning Polls

  • Mexico's ruling Morena party has named its candidates for eight governorships and the mayorship of Mexico City, with Clara Brugada nominated for the latter despite Omar Garcia Harfuch winning polls.
  • Harfuch, a former Mexico City police chief, was ruled out due to a gender quota requiring a female candidate. Despite this, he has stated he has no plans to leave the Morena party.
  • The Morena party, founded by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has also announced its nominee for the presidential race: former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.
  • Clara Brugada, the borough president of a low-income area on the city’s east side, was preferred by the leftist wing of Morena for her work building sports and cultural complexes in neighborhoods where past administrations focused on basic issues.
  • The party's unity is in question as a primary candidate who failed to secure her party’s nomination left Morena in Morelos state, south of Mexico City. Sen. Lucía Meza announced she will run on the opposition ticket for governor, claiming Morena doesn't care about the state.
