Morena Opens Internal Race for 17 State Coordinators and Bars Automatic ‘Consolation’ Placements

The party is imposing household surveys, stricter vetting and signed commitments to pick territorial leaders as a recent court reallocation of registrations changes its membership math.

Overview

  • Morena began registration for the Coordinaciones Estatales that will organize the party for 2027 contests, holding in-person and virtual sign-ups from June 22–27 with a goal to finish selections by December 31, 2026.
  • The multi-step internal procedure will require review of formal requirements, profile analysis and household surveys to choose coordinators who must sign declarations accepting survey methods, parity rules and attestations on legal and financial standing.
  • Party leaders explicitly ruled out repeating the 2024 practice where losing survey contenders received party or legislative posts, saying losers will not be guaranteed alternative positions and must respect internal decisions.
  • The Tribunal Electoral (TEPJF) recently nullified roughly 110,000 Morena affiliations and directed about 93,742 memberships to the new Somos México party, a change that will affect INE rolls and coalition calculations with PT and PVEM.
  • The new rules are meant to tighten candidate quality and territorial organization but will test negotiations with allies and the party’s reach on the ground as many sitting legislators seek internal candidacies and Somos México establishes itself.
