Morelia Authorizes Pursuit Beyond City Limits After Joint Raids as Homicides Trend Lower

The mayor says coordination with state and federal forces is essential to stop mobile crime cells.

Overview

  • Alfonso Martínez instructed Policía de Morelia to chase and capture suspects even outside municipal boundaries in coordination with other authorities.
  • A coordinated operation in Colonia Torreón Nuevo by SSP, SEDENA, Guardia Nacional, FGE and municipal police led to three detentions and the seizure of firearms and a banner with criminal messaging.
  • Security officials reported the three detainees could be linked to recent homicides in the city and to the placement of narcomantas.
  • Municipal figures for August show 137 people presented to the state prosecutor’s office, 75 for alleged crimes, with 39 vehicles recovered, nine firearms seized and 13 homicides, following nine in July and well below past monthly peaks above 40.
  • Authorities identified three out-of-state car-theft cells that alter vehicle identifiers and use escape routes via Pátzcuaro toward Uruapan and Tierra Caliente, Mil Cumbres, and Salamanca toward Guanajuato and Querétaro, urging victims to report immediately for recovery chances.
