More Than Four Million Brits Report Problems With Package Holidays

Charity data suggest weak seller accountability has left many travellers out of pocket, stressed or fighting for refunds.

Overview

  • A Yonder survey for Citizens Advice published on June 7 found that about 34% of adults who book package trips experienced a problem in the past year, which the charity estimates affects more than four million people in the UK.
  • Citizens Advice logged roughly 3,500 package-holiday complaints over the last 12 months, a rate of about 14 complaints a day, and said 42% of those related to all-inclusive trips booked abroad.
  • Complaint breakdowns show quality problems such as hotels not as described, poor food and unavailable facilities accounted for about one third of cases, while customer service failures like long waits and administrative errors made up 19%.
  • The problems have real costs for holidaymakers: one in four reported stress or anxiety and 17% paid extra daily expenses, and named complainants described unresolved refund disputes after major service failures.
  • Citizens Advice urges travellers to check booking protections, keep photos, receipts and contemporaneous records and report issues promptly while consumer bodies warn that some online and social-media bookings carry higher risk and may prompt calls for stronger seller accountability.
