More Than 200 Improvised Explosives Found at D.C. Cathedral as WMD Hate-Crime Charge Filed

Prosecutors cite nitromethane vials in the cache during ongoing federal testing.

Overview

  • Police arrested Louis Geri, 41, after finding a tent on the steps of St. Matthew’s Cathedral containing more than 200 handmade devices and parts.
  • Geri allegedly told officers he had “a hundred plus” explosives, threatened deaths if they approached, and described plans to trigger devices using modified bottle rockets.
  • A notebook titled “Written Negotiations for the Avoidance of Destruction of Property via Detonation of Explosives” expressed animosity toward the Supreme Court, the Catholic Church, Jewish people, and ICE.
  • Court documents say many devices appeared fully functional, and some recovered vials contained nitromethane along with other chemicals.
  • Authorities seized the cache for FBI testing, Geri was ordered held without bail, and no Supreme Court justices attended the Red Mass as the security response unfolded.
