More Girls Clear Class 12 Science Than Arts in India for First Time

Overview

  • 28.14 lakh girls cleared Class 12 science in 2024, nearly 90,000 more than the 27.24 lakh who passed in the arts stream.
  • Over 61 lakh students passed Class 12 in the science stream in 2024, making it the most chosen pathway across the country.
  • Enrollment of girls from marginalized backgrounds rose from 1.7 lakh in 2013 to 4.1 lakh in 2024, with Scheduled Tribe girls increasing from 60,000 to 1.4 lakh.
  • The ministry attributed the shift to expanded infrastructure under schemes like Samagra Shiksha, Atal Tinkering Labs, subject-specific labs and better-trained teachers.
  • Officials recommended seven states adopt a common board for Classes X and XII and urged expansion of STEM seats in higher education to meet growing demand.
