Overview

  • Following a blunt rebuke at Pimlico Race Course, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore sent a letter inviting President Trump to join a public safety walk in Baltimore in September.
  • Moore proposed that the walk include Mayor Brandon Scott, State’s Attorney Ivan Bates and other city leaders to discuss on-the-ground crime strategies.
  • The governor cited steep declines in violence as evidence of local gains, noting 201 homicides in 2024 and 89 so far this year compared with 125 at this point last year.
  • Moore criticized Trump’s talk of using the National Guard or federal forces for urban policing as “performative,” as Trump has deployed 800 Guard members in Washington, D.C., and was expected to patrol there Thursday night.
  • The White House did not immediately respond to Moore’s invitation, and Bates’s office said it has been in discussions with the governor’s team and stands ready to support the visit.
