Montreal Youth Terror Case Adjourned to Oct. 14 as Defence Awaits Disclosure

The delay stems from incomplete Crown disclosure after an urgent Aug. 20 arrest.

Overview

  • The 17-year-old is charged with providing or making available property or services for terrorist purposes, participating in a terrorist group, and facilitating a terrorist activity.
  • Police allege he intended at least one attack on behalf of the Islamic State and posted threatening comments on social media.
  • Federal prosecutor Marc Cigana said the Aug. 20 arrest was conducted under urgent circumstances, limiting the Crown’s readiness to disclose evidence before early hearings.
  • Defence lawyer Tiago Murias said full disclosure is needed to take a position on bail and to choose between a judge-only or jury trial, calling the delay normal and legitimate.
  • The youth also faces a charge of assaulting an RCMP officer after the arrest, and prosecutors caution the trial timeline could stretch many months.
