Month-Long Deluge Swamps Telangana as Kamareddy Nears Two-Day Rainfall Record

Moisture from the Bay of Bengal colliding with Arabian Sea winds focused extreme rain over saturated ground, overwhelming drainage.

Overview

  • State data show August totals topping 600 mm in multiple districts, including Kamareddy at 702.1 mm, Mulugu 668.2 mm, Jayashankar Bhupalpally 658.4 mm, Komaram Bheem Asifabad 617.2 mm and Warangal 612.7 mm, far above normal.
  • Kamareddy logged 576 mm over Aug. 26–28 in a clustered extreme with several mandals exceeding 300 mm in 48 hours, reported as the state’s second-highest two-day total since 1908.
  • An IMD scientist attributed the event to converging Bay of Bengal moisture and Arabian Sea winds; a red alert was issued on Aug. 27 with about 65 cm total rainfall cited in the area.
  • Rescue teams from the Army, SDRF and NDRF saved more than 1,400 people as officials confirmed at least six deaths and reported six missing across affected districts.
  • Flooding damaged transport and water infrastructure, with breaches at 120 minor irrigation tanks, collapses on National Highway 44, a caved railway track and 69 trains canceled, while districts like Mulugu remain on high alert with local disaster forces active.
