Montgomery Man Charged With Capital Murder in Dexter Avenue Killing Linked to Alleged Sexual Assault

Prosecutors cite alleged sexual assault as the basis for a capital count under Alabama law.

Overview

  • Police identified the suspect as Barry Andre Freeman, 51, in the Oct. 11 death of a man found on the 100 block of Dexter Avenue.
  • Charging documents allege Freeman’s advances were refused, he struck the victim in the throat, and then sexually assaulted him while the victim was unconscious.
  • The victim was identified in court records as David Crowe, 59, who was pronounced dead at the scene around 5:30 a.m.
  • Freeman was taken into custody on Oct. 12 and is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
  • Authorities say the case is an active homicide investigation, and court records show Freeman did not have an attorney listed at the time of reporting.
