Monterey Trail High Student Diagnosed With Active Tuberculosis on First Day of School

Sacramento County Public Health has launched contact tracing with on-site testing to curb potential spread.

Overview

  • The student was diagnosed with active tuberculosis on Aug. 14–15, has been isolated at home and is expected to make a full recovery.
  • Health authorities identified an exposure window from April 11 to July 17 and are sending notification letters to parents, staff and peers who may have been in close contact.
  • Dr. Olivia Kasirye recommended that anyone who receives an exposure notice get tested to provide peace of mind despite the low risk of transmission.
  • Elk Grove Unified School District will host on-site tuberculosis testing at Monterey Trail High to streamline contact tracing and support rapid diagnosis.
  • Sacramento County recorded 110 TB cases in 2024, and officials continue active surveillance following an earlier August case at Cache Creek Casino Resort.
