Montana Mother Arrested and Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run of Native American Woman Mika Westwolf

Sunny White charged with five felonies including vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment, seven months after hit-and-run killing of Mika Westwolf; blood tests revealed traces of fentanyl and meth in White's system, and methamphetamine was found in her vehicle.

  • Sunny Kathrinne White, a 28-year-old Montana mother of two, has been arrested and charged with five felonies, including vehicular homicide while under the influence and criminal child endangerment. The charges are linked to the fatal hit-and-run of Mika Josephine Westwolf, a 22-year-old Native American woman, in March 2023.
  • According to the affidavit, White's children, named Aryan and Nation, were in the car with her at the time of the fatal accident. Westwolf was walking home on Highway 93 when she was struck by White's car. Westwolf died at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries.
  • Following the incident, White was spotted removing items from her damaged car. She claimed to have hit a deer. However, the police investigation turned up methamphetamine, syringes, and two unopened packs of Narcan in White’s car. Later blood tests revealed traces of methamphetamine and fentanyl in White’s system.
  • The case has sparked controversy and upheaval in the community, lighting a spotlight on the alarming rates of missing or murdered Indigenous women in Montana. Westwolf’s family started the 'Mika Matters' movement to raise awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) and to demand that White be held accountable for her actions.
  • White has been released on a $200,000 bond. The outcome of her legal proceedings, as well as the broader implications of the case for issues of indigenous rights and drug-related crime, remain to be seen.
